Rulers are fine for approximation or when measurements taken aren't critical.
But the longer they are, the more the total length can be off.
The two below show the measurements on the wooden ruler to be 1/8“ longer than the steel one in a 36” run.
Ambient temps can also shrink or expand the ruler so these don't make for good measuring devices on critical measurements.
