Detergent Additive
An additive mixed to fuel and lubricants in order to keep the engine clean. The most used detergent additives in motor oils are metallic soaps that have enough base reserves to neutralize the acids formed during engine operation.8)
Detonation
Explosion of air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber that is outside of the normal controlled burn and is a commonly hazardous condition. An electrical valve that only lets current flow in one direction, commonly used in rectifiers
Dial Depth Gauge
Direct reading, clock type face with a drop contact on the bottom. The contact is slightly up into the base at rest. For piston depth at TDC, you set each end of the gauge on the flat surface the cylinder deck so that the center contact hangs down into the cylinder. Push down on the top button until the contact point touches the piston top. Read measurement (usually shown in 0.001 graduations)contact at zero, which is usually at the bottom of the base. Then the top button is pushed down to contact the work and the measurement is taken.
Dial Indicator
Direct reading, clock type gauge, when used in connection with adapters and a stand, can be used to measure crankshaft run out as well as piston position, trueness of a shaft (when shaft is placed between live centers)
Diaphragm
A rubber membrane as used in a carburetor or master cylinder to seal the upper chamber. 9)
Diaphragm Spring
Part of the clutch hub assembly, a sprung plate which, when installed, is under pressure to keep the clutch plates forced against each other.

Dispersant Additive
An additive, which keeps the solid contaminants in colloid suspension, thus prevents the oil sludge and varnish buildup on the engine parts. This additive is usually non metallic (ashless) and it is used together with detergent additives.13)
