Pre-77 Frame Mod for Oil Pump Removal

Article by chevelle of the XLFORUM 1)

This mod was done to make removing the oil pump possible without removing the motor.

It's a polished stainless steel removable section built to an '82 frame.
It's not a bolt on project to say the least.
This saves a lot of work if you need to service the pump.
It was better than a 16 hour project.

  • Draw it up
  • Mock the engine up with the pump in the frame
  • Cut the frame
  • Machine all the stainless bits (stainless is a bitch to work with)
  • Fit the parts
  • Tig weld them in
  • Bodywork to feather the 1/2 lap sleeve inserts in
  • Paint the frame
  • And finally polish the stainless.

Since the pipes were expected to be hung low to hug the bottom of the primary,
The kickstand was relocated to the right side of the frame.

It really makes the bike stick out in a row of bikes all leaning the other way. 2)
